Welcome to Distributed Systems

I hold the position of full professor at the VU University Amsterdam and in particular in its Department of Computer Science, for which I am currently the chair (and take a look at all the happy faces of other department chairs). My work is divided into three types of tasks:

  1. Research
  2. Teaching
  3. Management

My research takes place within The Network Institute

The ordering does not comply with the present-day priority setting: by now, chairing the department comprises the bulk of my activities, leaving virtually no time for teaching (alas), and only very little for research (even more, alas). This situation will not change for the coming years. If you need to see me in person, please contact our secretary for making an appointment (see contact information).

  • In September 2013, I biked from the Northcape to Oslo and finally turned my foto album with comments (in Dutch) into a digital version. If you're interested to download the 28MB file, please contact me.
  • In November 2013, we attempted to write a book in five days, on adaptive collective systems. In the end, it's more of a (long) position paper, beautifully published. Check it out.
  • I made a small video on how I see the future of Computer Sciences. It's also on YouTube. There's work to do.
